How to Maintain Your New Floor

by Flooring Market Australia

So your new floor is installed and looking fantastic, but how do you keep it that way?

The team at Flooring Market has put together this guide to give you the basic skills you need to maintain timber flooring, bamboo flooring, and floor tiles for years to come. Read on to find out more.

Maintaining Timber Flooring

Both solid timber and engineered timber flooring are long-term investments. With a little care and maintenance, your timber floor will stay in great condition for many years to come.

Clean Regularly

Your hardwood timber floor will look better and last longer with regular cleaning. This will prevent the build-up of dirt, spills, and other contaminants on and between the boards.

Sweep or Vacuum

To remove surface dirt, vacuum your floor once or twice a week with a soft bristle head or electrostatic attachment. You can also sweep using an electrostatic mop.

For more stubborn dirt, use a well-wrung, damp, lint-free mop and a pH-neutral cleaner.

Clean as You Go

Be sure to wipe up any spills as soon as they occur using a dry cloth or paper towel. If the spill is sticky, you can use a slightly moistened cloth.

Protect the Floor from the Sun

Direct sunlight will prematurely fade and discolour your timber floor. Rotate rugs and furniture to provide even cover for the floor over time or use blinds and shades.

Avoid Hot and Cold

Maintain a constant temperature in your home using climate control, insulation, or other methods.

Claws and High Heels

If you have pets, keep their claws trimmed to avoid scratching. It’s also a good idea to keep high heels and other sharp footwear off timber floors. The same goes for chairs, couches, and other furniture with hard, pointed feet.

Timber’s Laminated Cousin

For timber-look laminate floors, most of the maintenance tips above still apply. The main difference is that laminate should be given a thorough wet wash every few months using hot water, with a little soap added if necessary. After the wash, the floor must be dried thoroughly.

Maintaining Bamboo Flooring

Bamboo floors should be swept regularly to avoid the build-up of damaging grit. They can also be mopped, but they must never be wet thoroughly or left moist for more than a few minutes, as the moisture can seep into the bamboo.

Increase Your Spills Skills

Bamboo is porous and drinks, sauces or other liquids can penetrate it, causing permanent stains. If something spills, wipe it up as quickly as you can with a dry cloth or paper towel.

Protect Your Bamboo

Follow the same preventative care tips as for timber floors to keep your bamboo floor from fading or becoming scratched and dented.

Maintaining Tile Floors

Maintaining floor tiles is fairly straightforward. They just need a good clean once a week using a cleaner compatible with grout joints. You can use most household cleaners to remove soap scum on bathroom tiles. Be sure to give your tiles a thorough sweep before cleaning.

Avoid These Cleaners

It’s very important to avoid certain types of cleaning products with floor tiles:

●Any cleaners containing acid or bleach shouldn’t be used for routine maintenance

●Avoid wax-based cleaners and oil-based detergents and use sealants on grout joints only

●Harsh cleaning aids like steel wool pads or scouring pads containing metal shouldn’t be used on tile
